Fire season in California and I was seeking shelter from the smoke in my studio. Her face had been formed; I decided to leave her skin pale but scratched through the glaze to form vertical lines. She needed to be ethereal – not fully of this earth. Her hair is inspired by the Geishas I saw in the streets of Kyoto when I was a teenager. Her heart? A hand blown vase which belonged to my grandmother and which is filled with mementos.
